One of the most uncommon, yet thrilling sport available in the country, is sport fishing. It is often said that there are more fish in the sea in Costa Rica, that there are hooks to catch them. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, where you’ll find yourself alone face to the sea and its inhabitants.

Costa Rica holds the most world records in the history of international sport fishing competitions, with each year a new astonishing number of catches, particularly of swordfish and spearfish. Seasoned fishermen can go on fishing expeditions with one of the several professional active fishing companies offering this type of tours. All tours are organized with first quality equipment and boats, as well as highly qualified guides. If you are not a professional but just an amateur, armadas of smaller privately-owned boats also offer half-day or full-day fishing excursions. The rule is that every catch is released afterward to protect the fish population.

Whether you choose to try your hand at sport fishing in the Pacific or Caribbean, you’ll have a very different experience. In the Pacific, fishing season is year-round and it is relatively easy to catch big fish. The blue marlin particularly abounds here, as well as tuna and sea breams. Fly fishing is another sought after activity in the country, which can be done in fresh-river waters, and is just as exciting as deep sea sport fishing.

In the 2005 edition of the International Game Fish Association’s (IGFA) world records, Costa Rica is a definitely ahead of any other fishing destination, with 22 all-tackle records, 18 fly-fishing records and 77 line-class records. This amounted to 177 world records, the highest number for the country itself.

Check out Homer, Alaska in July. You’ll find lots of charter captains willing to take you out and troll for salmon or bottom-fish for huge halibut. I have fished the Anchor River outside of Homer, and can tell you that there are AWESOME silver salmon and king salmon runs pretty much every year. You simply can’t go wrong with the Kenai penninsula. Good luck!
